RELEVANT’s bimonthly print magazine explores the intersection of faith and culture, featuring profiles on bands and celebrities, journalistic think pieces on major issues and advice on life issues facing 20- and 30-somethings. I was the final pair of eyes on each page before it got uploaded to the printer, and I did several editing rounds on each piece, including fact-checking; line editing; copy editing; copy-fitting and filling in pull quotes, sidebars and photo captions. I did some development editing and occasionally wrote and assigned articles, as well.
I managed the feature-length content for the website from start to finish. I assigned article ideas and screened and curated pitches from writers, working with them on deadline and article direction and voice. I wrote headlines and subtitles; coordinated the web features schedule; edited articles for voice, clarity, grammar and AP style; formatted the articles for the website using basic HTML; and made sure the articles got posted. I also ran RELEVANT’s social media accounts as needed and copy edited daily “slices” on the site (short, newsy articles that are constantly updating on the homepage).
As the features editor, I was in charge of the features section for every weekly issue. I developed story ideas, assigned them to a team of three to four reporters and led the reporters through the writing process—helping them with direction and sources and giving them feedback on their drafts.
I assigned features to a team of freelance writers and coordinated with them on deadline, article angle and voice. I also fact-checked; line edited; copyedited; copyfit; and filled in pullquotes, sidebars and photo captions for each issue.
